Intel Confirms Large Cache CPUs for Next Year, But Not for Gamers

Intel Core 200 Lineup

AMD continues to lead with its 3D V-Cache technology, offering products for both data centers and consumers. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D has been well-received for its gaming performance, but finding it in stock can be a challenge due to high demand.

Intel’s New Core Ultra 200 Series Falls Short

On the other hand, Intel’s new Core Ultra 200 series hasn’t made a big splash. Sales on Amazon are low, and gamers have been unimpressed. In gaming benchmarks, the Core Ultra 200 series underperformed, trailing behind AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D by as much as 25%. Even though Intel highlighted its power efficiency, the series struggled to meet expectations.

Intel’s Focus on Data Centers

In a recent interview with tech experts Der8auer and Bens Hardware, Intel’s Tech Communication Manager Florian Maislinger addressed these issues. He explained that Intel is working on new processors with large cache, but they will be aimed at data centers—not gamers.

“The AMD CPUs are tailored for a very specific target group, and that group is gamers. We are aware that this technology can offer a lot to gamers, but it also comes with trade-offs and certain disadvantages or compromises that one has to accept,” Maislinger said.

Maislinger also shared Intel’s plans for next year, highlighting their focus on professional markets rather than desktops.

“That means, next year, there will be a CPU that features a cache tile, but not for desktops. In the server market, it’s a different market with a wider scope of potential reach than with desktop CPUs. But this is not the extremely large mass market for us. We still sell a very large number of CPUs that aren’t necessarily used for gaming.”

Looking Ahead

Intel’s upcoming Clearwater Xeon processors will reportedly include a large cache integrated directly into the base tile. These new processors, expected next year, could have up to 17 active tiles. While Intel’s packaging technology might support a separate cache tile, a layered approach similar to AMD’s 3D V-Cache could be better for reducing latency. For now, AMD remains ahead in the gaming space. Intel’s Core Ultra 200 series has struggled to gain traction, leaving AMD`sRyzen 7 9800X3D as the go-to choice for gamers looking for top-tier performance.
